The provincial Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy was touring Maple Ridge on Tuesday.

George Heyman and Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Bob D’Eith visited the Ridge Meadows Recycling facilities, which the minister noted was the recipient of the Outstanding Commitment to Environmental Stewardship award in 2022.

Heyman, who is also the MLA for Vancouver-Fairview, commented about the work that the recycling agency does to add more recycling services.

He also met with the students and teachers in the SD42 Environmental School, while visiting them at UBC’s Malcolm Knapp Research Forest.

“Great to be with Bob D’Eith, Maple Ridge-Mission to learn more about this program to support youth and cultivate lifelong environmental enthusiasm,” he posted on Facebook. “Great questions too! Really enjoyed meeting principal Nicole and the SD42 instructors and hearing about their vision for eco-education and inspiring school aged kids to connect with nature.”

D’Eith added “It was interesting to learn how the students meet the school district curriculum holistically and in context with the environment.”

The NDP government members then explored the UBC Research Forest, hearing about conservation, biodiversity research, and community connection.

“Thank you to MKRF Manager Helene [Marcoux] and her team for taking the time to share insights and research findings from their ongoing work to conserve and protect fish, water, soil, and biodiversity in this truly wild space,” said Heyman.

And they visited the Grant Hill Aquifer, and met with people from the Thornhill Aquifer Protection Study (TAPS), to learn more about the area.
