The Albion Grade 7 boys volleyball team won the district championships on Wednesday, Nov. 29.

The tournament was played at Garibaldi Secondary, and the top-seeded Albion squad continued their great work from the regular season.

Proud coach Candice Colgan said she led a group of 10 boys who are dedicated, and who love the game – including her own identical twin sons.

In the championship game, they beat c’usqunela, and got past Alouette Elementary in the semi-final.

Colgan is a former NCAA volleyball player who played out a scholarship in the U.S., at a Pac-10 program, and during her high school career was a member of a Richmond Colts team that won a national championship. She coached the Albion team to the finals last year as well, but they finished second.

She encourages other community volunteers to get involved in coaching. Colgan also coached high school girls volleyball, as an assistant at Samuel Robertson Technical.

“It’s an amazing sport, and I have had a blast coaching the boys, and especially coaching my twin boys,” said Colgan. “I didn’t realize how rewarding coaching is.”

“It was exciting to see them win a trophy. They had a lot of fun.”

Her assistant coach is Sarah Matlock, who is also the district’s athletic director at the elementary level.
