Plenty of people will be walking with a purpose in Pitt Meadows this weekend as the Move to Cure ALS for the Tri-Cities will be kicking off.
Wendy Toyer, executive director of the ALS Society of British Columbia, explained that this annual fundraiser is now in its 13th year and has managed to raise more than $332,000 in total.
Last year’s event saw the walk return to being in person for the first time since 2019, with slightly more than 60 people participating in the Pitt Meadows fundraiser.

Toyer explained that being forced to move to a virtual format during the pandemic had hurt the fundraiser’s attendance and donation numbers, with pre-pandemic walks in Pitt Meadows reaching upwards of 300 participants.
“In 2020-2021, the events had to pivot to a virtual event which resulted in a drop in participation and revenues, down by 40 per cent,” she said.
“We are hopeful 2023 will be a rebound year. Our goal for this year is to raise $14,000.”
The Move to Cure ALS fundraiser will take place at the Waterfront Commons Park in Osprey Village on Sunday, June 4. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the walk starting at 11 a.m.
All donations will go to the ALS Society of British Columbia, with the goal of creating a world-class ALS centre at UBC.
