Just think twice before you party. Operation Red Nose, ICBC and Ridge Meadows RCMP were trying to get that message out Friday afternoon as they set up their first CounterAttack roadblock of the season on Golden Ears Way.

The time, late afternoon, and day, were appropriate.

“It’s Friday and we know this is when crashes happen. It’s a dangerous time for crashes, particularly with pedestrians involved,” said Kate Woochuk with ICBC.

Woochuk and Ridge Meadows RCMP, Operation Red Nose and Maple Ridge Towing set up the road block to have brief chats with motorists to drive home that message. They also handed out cards telling people how to use the free Operation Red Nose service in which teams of volunteers drive partiers and their vehicles, home.

“I really think our most important message is, if you’re heading out for festivities, … just call, plan ahead for a safe ride home, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or Operation Red Nose,” Woochuk said.

“We’re doing education, more than an enforcement blitz right now. We thought by coming here at this time, and speaking to drivers at the beginning of the weekend, this allows drivers time to make appropriate plans.”

Speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving are the leading cause of traffic deaths.

But the roadblock was no good for catching those on cellphones, said one Ridge Meadows RCMP officer. As soon as people see the flashing lights, they throw down the phone.

Ridge Meadows RCMP will be running CounterAttack roadblocks from now until New Year’s Day. “Chances are, if you drink and drive, that you will be caught and will have to pay the consequences. Those are even worse if you get involved in a crash,” said Const. Brenda Winpenny in a release.
