Maple Ridge firefighters put out a barn fire along 232nd Street

Fire destroyed a barn in east Maple Ridge on Tuesday as it did a house on the same property about two years ago.

The blaze started around noon and quickly engulfed the wooden structure, which housed an old car.

Its proximity to trees and homes in the Yennadon neighbourhood concerned the fire department.

Three fire trucks and 12 firefighters, though, had the fire under control within minutes.

The two-hectare property at 12498 – 232nd Street is up for sale. A house on the property was destroyed in another fire more than two years ago.

Assistant fire chief Mark Smitton said the property owner noted people have repeatedly broken into the barn since.

“There’s a good chance [the fire] was started by vagrants,” said Smitton.
