Gearing up for May 14 election

Registration can be done online or at the mall or at the door

Elections BC is offering voters an easy way to get on the voter’s list for the May 14 provincial election.

Registering online takes about 10 minutes and requires only your driver’s licence number or last six numbers of your social insurance number.

You can also sign up in person.

In Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, people can get on the voter’s list by going to Pitt Meadows Arena this Saturday, or going to the Walmart in Port Coquitlam on Sunday and looking for an Elections BC table.

Elections BC staff will also be going door-to-door in high mobility neighbourhoods, new subdivisions and residential complexes, in order to get people on the list.

In Maple Ridge-Mission (the boundary between the two ridings is 224th Street from the Fraser River north to Abernethy Way), voter registration drives takes place at Haney Place Mall this Wednesday (today) and next Wednesday (March 20) and at Valley Fair Mall on Friday and Saturday.

Registration also takes place at Golden Ears Winter Club, in Albion flats, on March 23.

From Feb. 25 to March 15, more than 1.9 million notices will have been mailed to homes in B.C. The notices ask residents to register or update their voter information using Online Voter Registration or by phoning Elections BC toll-free at 1-800-661-8683.

People can also identify the names of voters no longer living at their address and request that their name be removed from the voters list at that address (www.elections.bc.ca/remove).

During the first part of April, Elections BC officials will visit long-term care facilities and homeless shelters to provide voter registration and update services.

In the last few days, two details have been confirmed.

A meeting on the weekend of Liberals in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows formally acclaimed Pitt Meadows Coun. Doug Bing as the party’s candidate.

Maple Ridge-Mission NDP candidate Mike Bocking kicks off his campaign this Saturday, when he opens his office at 22618 Lougheed Hwy., at 10 a.m., and flips flapjacks for raising funds.
