A former Maple Ridge resident has pleaded guilty to a charge of assault in connection with a January 2013 incident at a townhouse complex near Kanaka Way.
Curtis Wayne Sagmoen, born in 1980, was facing a charge of assault causing bodily harm, with a trial set to start earlier this week.
However, a plea of guilty to a lesser charge of assault against a woman was entered Monday in Port Coquitlam provincial court.
Sagmoen received a sentence of time served and 24 months of probation.
He had owned a townhouse in Kanaka Creek Estates on Gilker Hill, until a bank foreclosure in 2013, according to foreclosure documents.
Sagmoen was raised in Maple Ridge with two brothers and worked as a pile driver. His parents moved to Salmon Arm in 2004 and were well known for their work in cutting-horse competitions.
Sagmoen, though, faces other charges in the B.C. Interior and is scheduled to appear in B.C. Supreme Court in Vernon on Feb. 11 to fix a date for a trial on charges of assault and assault causing bodily harm.
He also faces several other charges, including disguising his face with intent to commit an offence, intentionally discharging a firearm, using a firearm to commit an offence, uttering threats, careless use of a firearm and pointing a firearm, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, in connection with an Aug. 27, 2017 incident in Falkland, near Vernon.
Police say a meeting had been set up via an online website used by sex workers, and when the victim arrived a male suspect produced a firearm and threatened her.
The victim was able to flee unharmed.
The date set to address those charges is Aug. 2 for a pre-trial conference, with trial date set for Sept. 9 in Vernon Supreme Court.
Sagmoen’s family owns the farm in Silver Creek, B.C., where the remains of 18-year-old Traci Genereaux of Vernon were discovered in November 2017.
No charges have been laid in that case.
