The patrons of the Haney BC Liquor Store donated more for dry grad than the customers at any other store in B.C.
The government liquor store in the ValleyFair Mall raised just over $9,500 in the dry grad campaign. Robin Fraser, a spokesperson for the BC Liquor Distribution Branch noted that the funds all go toward grad celebrations in the local school district.
“The community here is great for donating to whatever we’re asking for, but this year’s dry grad was exceptional,” said a local store employee.
Customers are given a chance to donate as they purchase their items. For their part in the fundraiser, the store employees each got a metal camping cup.
“Historically, dry grad was an event designed to reduce the physical safety risks associated with traditional informal community graduation activities,” noted Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District spokesperson Irena Pochop. “It has now become a given part of the annual graduation celebration and continues to provide a safe environment for students to celebrate their individual and collective successes.
Schools conduct other fundraisers to finance their dry grads, and ceremonies will be taking place at Maple Ridge high schools in late May and early June.
“Over the years, dry grad has evolved as a graduation celebration activity recognized for its capacity to create accessibility and invite inclusive participation for all members of the graduating class regardless of social, financial, or academic grouping,” said Pochop.
