Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows public schools closed Monday

After weekend snowfall, even more expected to start week.

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have not seen the last of the snow.

Public schools in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are closed today, according to the local school district.

"All Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows public schools will be closed tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 6, said Irena Pochop, communications manager for School District No. 42.

It continue to monitor the situation throughout the day, and post an update as soon as one is available.

The school district cleared walkways and sanded parking lots on the weekend, which experienced heavy snowfall Saturday, followed by more on Sunday.

Environment Canada expects more snow Monday, two to four centimetres by morning.

Another five centimetres are expected that night, with temperatures dipping to minus-5.

There's a 60 per cent chance of flurries on Tuesday, with temperatures dipping to minus-6.

"An intense low pressure system moving across Washington will bring snow to the Fraser Valley overnight tonight and continue through Monday night as a second, broad low pressure area follows in behind. Current guidance suggests total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm by Monday night," according to Environment Canada.

"However, due to the convective nature of the air mass, amounts may vary widely across the region."

 

Transportation

TransLink bus service is currently running with only minor delays on some routes. Slippery road conditions are being reported throughout Metro Vancouver and all staff are taking extra caution in these conditions.

TransLink continues to co-ordinate with municipalities and contractors to ensure bus routes are plowed first and kept clear and to ensure timely information gets to our customers about routes impacted by snow or ice. Push trucks are out to assist vehicles that are stuck or having difficulty on steep routes.

HandyDART is currently operating essential services only for renal and cancer patients in Maple Ridge.

West Coast Express Train 1 heading westbound was delayed this morning 30 minutes due to a switch issue at Pitt River Bridge. The second train was delayed 10 minutes.

B.C. Hydro has restored power to all residences in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
