The airport society has finally amended its bylaws to allow the mayors of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge to sit on its board as directors.
The bylaw change gives the mayors the right to participate in meetings, but does not allow them to vote.
Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters welcomes the change, saying it was a long time coming.
“We were never allowed in in-camera meetings,” said Walters.
“Now this allows us to be at the table for all discussions. That’s a good thing.”
The Pitt Meadows Regional Airport Society took over the airport from the federal government in 1997.
The society is currently run by a board of nine directors appointed by Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows municipal councils.
Walters said it is important for Pitt Meadows to be represented on the board because what goes on at the airport affects residents.
“We are part owners with Maple Ridge and we have liability issues. We want to protect that,” she added.
Directors on the airport society: Michael Pierce, Mark Miller, Greg Andrews, Dr. Ann McAfee, Geoffrey Johnston, Murray Day and Jim Barrett.
Arborist report needed
The City of Pitt Meadows wants an arbourist report before it will consider an application to subdivide a property into four smaller lots.
Council requested the report to make sure trees growing on the Hammond Road property remain as a buffer.
Hub Engineering and Kuljeet Chahal have applied to have the property at 19454 Hammond Rd. rezoned from suburban residential to small lot residential.
The proposed lots are 5,446 square feet in area and will be accessed via shared driveways from Hammond Rd.
Beer garden for soccer
The City of Pitt Meadows has approved a permit for a beer garden at the newly formed West Coast Auto Group Football Club’s first adult soccer tournament.
The tournament will take place at Pitt Meadows Athletic Park, in conjunction with the annual Labour Day weekend competition hosted previously by the now-defunct Pitt Meadows Soccer Association.
It’s the first time a beer garden will be allowed in one of the city’s parks.
Director of parks and facilities David Boag said club executives have worked closely with parks staff in the past to host safe and excellent quality sporting events.
“They’ve earned a very high credibility, where staff are confident that this group are fully capable of hosting an event like this in a very orderly and safe manner.”
