Pitt Meadows buildings nominated for awards

Community centre, Solaris condos are up for recognition

Two buildings in Pitt Meadows have been nominated for the 2012 Commercial Building Awards, recognizing the best developments in the Lower Mainland.

The City of Pitt Meadows’ new South Bonson Community Centre and RG Properties Ltd.’s Solaris residential and commercial development are both nominated for awards.

The South Bonson Community Centre opened last year, and is the city’s first LEED gold-certified ‘green’ building, employing a number of innovative environmentally-friendly features.

The facility was built on the site of an old mill, and uses reclaimed wood throughout. The building uses natural light wherever possible and rainwater is collected for use in the facility’s toilets. The building also features a sprung wood floor for dance classes, and a small boardroom for meeting.

The new community centre features more than 12,000 square feet of recreational and community space, including a banquet room capable of accommodating weddings with up to 170 guests.

The facility now hosts fitness classes, arts and crafts workshops and much more.

Solaris at Meadows Gate is located on Harris Road next to the Pitt Meadows Civic Centre and Spirit Square. The development marks the first two mid-rise mixed-use buildings in the community and the third building is the new home of the Pitt Meadows Library.

A fourth building in this mixed-use development is still to come.
