Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge MP speaks about high gas prices

Dalton says struggling families shouldn’t pay carbon tax

Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge MP Marc Dalton spoke in the House of Commons recently about the need to cut the federal Carbon Tax.

Gas prices across the Lower Mainland jumped to 214.9 cents per litre in the past week, as prices hiked about a dime overnight. The Conservative Dalton accused the governing Liberals “backed by the NDP and Bloc.” of being out of touch with ordinary Canadians.

“Right now, gas is $2.15 a litre, the highest in North America. The member for Kootenay-Columbia just told me that across the line, it is $1.30 Canadian. People are struggling. One-seventh of food bank users are people who are working and cannot afford to eat,” said Dalton.

“Will the member not recognize that enough is enough, and that it is time to axe the tax?”

The carbon tax contributes about 14 cents per litre to the price of gas, or 10 cents in Quebec.

B.C. has the highest gas prices in Canada. While gas prices in Dalton’s riding are high, other jurisdictions do not face the same pain at the pump. Some of the best prices in Edmonton are 129.9, Regina 148.9, Winnipeg 143.9, and Ottawa 149.9, according to GasBuddy.com

The B.C. sudden increase has been blamed on refinery issues in Southern California impacting supply, and pushing up prices.
