A plane crashed into a field in Pitt Meadows Sunday sending the pilot to hospital.

Pitt Meadows firefighters, BC Ambulance and the Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to the crash involving a single-engine plane at about 3 p.m. on June 11, in a field east of the runway, east of Baynes Road.

The pilot, the lone occupant of the aircraft, was coming in for an approach on the main runway at Pitt Meadows Regional Airport, but didn’t make it, crashing upside down.

“I asked him upon getting on scene if he ran out of fuel or had mechanical issues, he didn’t indicate anything,” said Lieutenant Scott Kyle with Pitt Meadows Fire and Rescue.

The main object of fire crews was his personal safety and well-being, noted Kyle. Since they did not know if there was a fuel leak, they asked the man, who was gathering his belongings from the aircraft, to bring the items away from the plane and make sure the engine was turned off. Firefighters stretched an exposure line out to him as a precaution if the plane did catch fire.

The pilot, said Kyle was walking and talking and walked up to the ambulance.

Ridge Meadows RCMP confirmed the pilot suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services as a precautionary measure.

Ridge Meadows Investigative Support Team attended the scene and determined there was no criminality, said the RCMP, adding that the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has conduct of the investigation.
