A Feb. 3 soft re-opening of the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre may not include the pool or change areas.

City of Maple Ridge Mayor Mike Morden said that the facility commissioning process is still underway and “the city has no certainty at this time” about the opening of the pool.

“The public has been disappointed twice,” already, he added.

Starting Jan. 25, there will be a full facility closure for the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre to prepare for the facility’s soft opening, which is to include the new lobby and the main entrance.

“However, as we continue with the commissioning process, the Feb. 3 opening of the pool and change area is still tentative,” said a Jan. 20 notification on the city’s website.

The notification does say, though, swimming lessons will begin on Feb. 18.

The closure will run until Feb. 2 and will affect all areas of the Leisure Centre, including the fitness centre, gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms and in-person program registration.

During the closure staff will be cleaning the entire facility, completing touch-ups, installing office equipment, training staff teams, moving staff into their new workspaces and moving the customer service station from the temporary second-floor location to the new lobby.

“This full closure will help ensure an effective transition for staff and customers,” read the notification.

Registered programs have been either relocated, postponed or cancelled during the week-long closure.

A total of 36 drop-in gym activities have been cancelled and Healthy Heart will not be running Jan. 27, 29 or 31.

All four classes of sportball have been cancelled Jan. 29 and a refund made available.

Five tennis programs have been relocated to the Greg Moore Youth Centre on Jan. 25 and Feb. 1.

Basketball has been cancelled on Jan. 29 and a refund available.

Pickleball has been cancelled on Jan. 28.

Boccia has been cancelled on Jan. 27 and a refund available.

As for pre-registered fitness and health classes, On The Move With Parkinson’s, ActivAging-Get Up and Go, Power Up, TRX, and Tai Chi, have cancellations during the week and refunds made available.

The Jan. 28 class, Yoga for Pain and Anxiety has been relocated to the Greg Moore Youth Centre, along with the Jan. 27 class Parent and Toddler Yoga and the Jan. 29 class Baby and Me Boot Camp.

Child Minding and Parent Child Playtime has been cancelled and Preschool Soccer and Preschool T-Ball Gym have been cancelled from Jan. 18 to Feb. 8.

the Jan. 27 session of Children’s Floor Hockey has been moved to Eric Langton elementary and all other sessions will remain in the MRLC.

In-person registration at the MRLC will not be available during the full-facility closure. Customers can still register online at mapleridge.ca/1484 and by phone at 604-467-7422.

Customers who attend the soft reopening will have the opportunity to provide feedback about their experience, either digitally or via feedback card.
