Ridge Mountie goes 'above and beyond'

Const. Tammy Lang provides first aid to passenger in distress.

Police are never really off duty, a detail Const. Tammy Lang learned about last Wednesday on her way for police training in Chilliwack.

Lang was eastbound on Hwy. 1 near the Yale Road exit when she saw a man wildly waving at vehicles on the highway.

“I had no idea what the problem was," Lang said.

“I saw a semi-truck on the side of the road and this man acting quite frantically. I had some difficulty in understanding the man, but soon learned that his partner inside the semi was in some form of a medical distress," she said in a RCMP release.

Lang ran over and got into the passenger side of the large truck, and provided first aid. With medical intervention badly needed, she called an ambulance and stayed with him until paramedics arrived.

"In my opinion, the man who flagged me down is the true hero.  He did all he could to get help for his friend by waving me down," Lang said.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said the incident is an example of an officer going "above and beyond."

"All police need to be ready to respond and deal with various unexpected situations, and Const. Lang excelled in this case.

"Even though she was focused on the training she was headed to Const. Lang reacted to the situation and ensured the victim received medical assistance. All of us at Ridge Meadows RCMP are very proud of her actions.”
