Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue helped a hypothermic female after she tried to rescue a dog stranded on an island in the Alouette River in Maple Ridge on Thursday.

The search team responded to call for help around 4:30 p.m.

The female had entered the water to access the dog, who had swam across the frigid water and was stranded, according to search and rescue.

Swiftwater technicians deployed the team's new "rapid deployment craft" and brought the female and dog back to shore, where she was transferred to a B.C. Ambulance.

"RMSAR would like to remind the public to use caution when walking near frozen [or cold] waterways and never enter without specialized equipment and training."

According to Environment Canada, temperatures in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge dipped to minus-6 C Thursday evening.
