In time for two parades in Metro Vancouver, TransLink is rolling out a special Vaisakhi-themed bus wrapped with art created by Jag Nagra.

The parades (nagar kirtans) are planned April 13 in Vancouver and April 20 in Surrey, on streets in Newton.

The design for the new Vaisakhi bus takes inspiration from the artistry of Rumala Sahibs, embroidered fabrics found in Sikh gurdwaras. The wrap features bright orange and blue, the traditional colours of Sikhism, and also features a floral pattern.

“This has been a dream of mine for years,” said Nagra, a Pitt Meadows-based artist.

“I’ve always wanted to see my artwork on a bus. Whether it’s the younger or older generations, I hope they feel a sense of true belonging and pride in their culture when they see this special bus.”

Back in 2021 Nagra’s art was featured on a special Diwali-themed jersey for Vancouver Canucks.

The two Vaisakhi parades in this region mean street closures and re-routing of some buses. In Surrey, the 323 and 393 buses will be rerouted for parade preparations on Friday, April 19, and routes 323, 324 and 329 will be rerouted for the parade on April 20. Also, there will be extra Expo Line and Millennium Line service from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 20. Check for alerts and advisories on translink.ca.
