Firefighters rescued a man on a small skiff stuck in the ice on the Fraser River near Maple Ridge on Saturday.

Around noon, Township of Langley firefighters were called to Grant's Landing – a floating home community on the Fraser River – at 20837 Louie Crescent, for a report of a person stuck in the ice in the river.

Crews arrived to find a man stranded on a small skiff stuck in the ice.

The man was reportedly working to break up the ice jammed up around the float home community, according to a witness report.

The boat became jammed in the unstable ice several metres from shore. The ice was unstable and could be heard cracking with the river currents.

The fire department commandeered a nearby boat, threw a line to the man and pulled the boat out to himself.

The fire department then pulled the male in to shore over the ice.

He was not injured.
