It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of George on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the age of 100. George was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Ragna, his son, David (Sheila) and daughter, Susie. He leaves behind seven children; Clifford, Richard (Ellana), Katie (Lyle), Evelyn (Wayne), Lorraine (Travis), Margaret, and Theresa (Rob); fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Born on a farm in Moosomin, Saskatchewan the youngest of twelve children, George left home at the age of 17 to move to the Vancouver area. He worked as a carpenter for a few years before enlisting with the Canadian Armed Forces in November, 1940. He served in England and Scotland before taking part in the June 6, 1944 D Day Invasion of Normandy, and fought with the 16th Field Engineers throughout France, Belgium, and Holland. In 1946 George settled down on a 20 acre farm in Pitt Meadows. He worked for Fraser River Pile and Dredge, joining the Piledrivers, Divers, Bridge, Dock and Wharf Builders Local 2404 in 1948 eventually retiring in 1982. George grew blueberries on the farm and then later started one of the first cranberry farms in Pitt Meadows. Over the years he became a mentor for others wanting to grow cranberries.
George cared deeply about his family; supporting them in whatever way he could. He enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting, sharing the produce from his garden, and playing crib with anyone who could count properly.
