OWEN, GERALD, FREDRICK

AUGUST 17, 1936 – OCTOBER 9, 2014

Gerry died peacefully at home on October 9, 12:15am after a 3 year battle with a bone infection. He lived a full and adventurous life. He was the second son of Norm and Mary Owen. Raised in Haney, he started his adventure at 15 years old. Wanting to be a bronc rider, he traveled the rodeo circuit. As a teen, he worked with his Uncle Steve on the mink farm where he learned his trapping skills. After high school, Gerry started logging and continued doing so until his accident in 1995. During his 20’s, he got his pilots license and flew up and down the coast delivering Pile Drivers to and from their work. On Oct 4th 1957, Gerry married his first love, Deanna Wood. Soon after his marriage, he began working at his dad’s hotel, The Maple Ridge Hotel. His accident did not stop him from being active. He continued to drive his truck, pull a 27 foot travel trailer, drive his tractor, plant his garden, pull logs out of the bush, and his proudest accomplishment was filling up his woodshed. He loved the sport of curling and he enjoyed playing and coaching baseball. He was honored to call the names of WW1 veterans on Remembrance Day with his youngest grandson Malcom. His happiest moments were with his family going on summer holidays each year and the yearly Christmas sing-a-longs. He leaves many happy memories with his wife Deanna of 57 years, children, Allan (Debbie), Colleen (Martin) and John (Kris). Grandchildren: Laura, Theresa, Douglas, Michael, Kiirsti, Kent, Sheena, Tanya, Erintaya and Malcom. Great-grand children Hana, Aiden, Conner, Jack, Sam and Leah. He was a special brother- in-law to Viola and Sally and special Papa Gerry to Kevin, Kerry, Kent, Bryce and Clayton.
