Hazel Thompson (nee Crocker) was born in Port Aux Basque, Newfoundland on Mouse Island. She was the oldest of 12 children. A long time resident of Port Coquitlam and then Maple Ridge, she is survived by her six children - Catherine, Gail, Moira, Thomas, Susan and Patricia. Eight grandchildren - Colleen, Lungi, Max, Leanne, Kyle, Sally, Hannah, Melanie and three great grandchildren - Max, Emma and Kai.
Hazel along with her son Tom, for a number of years operated a feed store at Webster's Corners called Chinook Feed and Tack, alongside her husband, Gordon's business - Chinook Industries. They sold, installed and repaired pumps for local residents. They became well known in the neighborhood for their generosity, fairness and hard work ethic.
Hazel was a loving, caring and generous mother to her family.
She dished out a fair amount of hidings when her children were young, but only if they deserved it, usually finding both mother and child laughing and chasing each other around the kitchen.
We have fond memories of our home on Glen Drive where she was well known in the neighborhood as a dependable, caring friend to anyone in need.
An avid supporter of the NDP party all her life she worked hard to help bring Dave Barrett to leadership and he became a close friend.
Her children, family in Toronto, distant relatives in Newfoundland and all those who knew her will miss her very much. She will remain in our hearts and memories forever.
