November 13, 1971 - November 15, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce that Ian passed away on November 15, 2019 at McKenney Creek Hospice in Maple Ridge, BC, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He was well known and loved for his larger than life humour, wit, and sarcasm, but more importantly his endless positivity.
He was born on November 13, 1971 at Royal Columbia Hospital to Gail and Munro. He graduated from Centennial High School in 1989 and attended Malaspina College. He was a self-proclaimed foodie working in the kitchen, management and sales within the food industry for most of his adult life. He later expanded to sales in other industries before falling ill.
Ian was a proud son, husband, dad, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was deeply committed to the Maple Ridge community through his childrens' schools and sports organizations, as well a proud Board Member for Alouette Addictions prior to his diagnosis. He was a true sports enthusiast and loved football, hockey, soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. His favourite past times included endless twitter debates and expressing his opinions on TSN1040, but most of all he loved watching his sons play the various sports they loved. He was a true presence in the stands and on the sidelines and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Ian was predeceased by his dad Munro Cooper and stepdad Colin Hassell. He is survived by his mum Gail Hassell; sister Stephanie (Wayne), stepbrother Kevan (Richelle) and stepsister Cherie; wife Angela; sons Cameron and Colin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Simon Yu, Dr. Ursula Luitingh, Dr. Vicky Chan, and Dr. Michelle Little for giving Ian hope, fostering his positivity and believing in the impossible to give him three extra years. A special thank you to all the amazing doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at Ridge Meadows Hospital Oncology and Emergency departments as well as the Hospice team at McKenney Creek for the immeasurable care and support provided to Ian during his journey. You truly are Angels on Earth and we cannot thank you enough.
