April 23, 1928 - October 15, 2023
On October 15, 2023, we said a heartfelt farewell to an amazing friend, mother and grandmother, Mavis Thornton. She left behind a tapestry of laughter, love and memories that will forever be etched in our hearts.
Mavis was born in Port Haney on April 23, 1928, and at the age of twenty, she ventured to the fishing village of Nootka Sound for work. It was there that she met Harold Thornton, and their connection soon led to marriage. Following their union, they made their home in Ucluelet, BC, where their daughter Darlene was born, and together they owned the Thornton Motel.
In January 1975, the family moved back to Maple Ridge where Mavis spent most of her life. Over the years, she formed connections with many because of her inclusive, welcoming nature and zest for life. She left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.
Her final few years were spent in the Okanagan, close to her family.
She was survived by her devoted daughter, Darlene (John) Sheriff, grandson Nicholas (Cass) Spencer and great-grandsons Kade and Nate.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold and grandchildren Dawson and Hali Spencer.

Rest easy Mavis. You are a legend who defied all the odds, and we love you for that. Though you're no longer with us, the love and joyful memories you left us with will endure, bringing comfort and smiles for a very long time.
