Dear Editor,

[Re: On the page: Library encourages climate action, mapleridgenews.com, Dec. 17]

I saw your article about the Maple Ridge Climate Series being offered at the MR Public Library by Regenerate BC and the Maple Ridge Climate Hub. I felt compelled to attend, because I love this place, my beautiful home. I’m anxious about the impacts of the climate crisis.

I believe that collective, cooperative, collaborative action is key. We are travelling together on this path. We are challenged to transform our community and build a renewable energy future. This has to be a long term, intergenerational effort.

I find I just feel better when I’m around other people who are doing what they can to build solutions. The Climate Series sessions have been wonderful, I’m learning so much about the great work my neighbours are doing. There is strength in numbers. By acting locally we send out ripples of awareness and connection around the globe.

Thank you, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News, for paying attention to climate-related issues. Raising awareness is not some fuzzy thing. It is foundational to supporting informed change.

The Senegalese forest conservationist, Baba Dioum, said: “In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.” There are many people and organizations working hard to protect the beauty that is here and protect it for future generations.

Your reporting is a conduit for information that helps us understand each other and our home place, come to love what is precious, and be inspired to act in the ways that are available to each of us.

I know local publications everywhere are under assault. We really need your local reporting. It is much appreciated.

Holly Arntzen, Maple Ridge
