Letters: Tax numbers ‘not even close’

Looking at my property taxes this year, they have gone up 13.36 per cent.

Re: Property taxes “even out” across city (The News, June 15).

The article speaks of property taxes being a final 3.15 per cent, with the highest being 8.7 per cent, where the home values have increased more than average.

Looking at my property taxes this year, they have gone up 13.36 per cent.

Last year I paid with the home owner’s grant – $3,191.15.

This year it’s $3,617.54, with the same grant – a $426.39 increase.

My assessed house value rose by 19.09 per cent, which is less than the 27 per cent average, so I’m completely confused by the numbers being reported. Something in not quite right.

You might want to do some further fact checking into the numbers city hall has provided as they are not even close to what I’m seeing as a resident of Maple Ridge.

City hall’s explanation on how they arrived at those numbers may make a more interesting story.
