Re: Semi-auto guns available anywhere (The News, July 27).

The article puts it precisely.  The more military-style firearms and handguns, the greater the likelihood of their “escaping” into the hands of criminals, the deranged, the political or religious zealots.

There is no place in a civilized society for an overabundance of such firearms on the streets.

To suggest otherwise, to say, “... it doesn’t stop until a second gun gets on the scene,” is simply insane.

We don’t live in an ‘Old West’ (that never was) and certainly don’t need to live in a new wild west.

But it seems that gun proponents would like to see that happen.

Just how many ‘Billy the Kid’ or ‘Wild Bill’ wannabes are there out there, anyway? And, should they be making public policy in Canada?

I don’t want someone defending to the death of anyone in my family, friendship groups or community, their presumed right to carry personal arms, because that is the bottom line and a predictable outcome, witness the ongoing shooting deaths in the U.S. daily, and increasingly in Canada.

A sane, safe, civilized society does not need or benefit from more restricted, semi-auto or concealed guns, just the opposite.

By the way, I have owned ‘long rifles’ for 50 years and look forward to the fall and hunting in B.C.’s great outdoors, where one shot is more than enough in most instances.
