The Port Coquitlam Ridge Meadows Ringette Association is holding a free event Saturday, June 11, where kids will be able to strap on skates and try the sport for free at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge.

“This association is quite strong on the Port Coquitlam side of the bridge, but it needs to become stronger on the Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge side,” said parent Greg Chapman. “This is an extremely affordable sport for families that are struggling financially that want their kids to learn to skate.”

Annual registration is $100, which included 40 to 50 ice times, each around an hour long.

There are divisions for children under nine years of age for boys and girls, for those new to skating, and for those with limited skating experience.

As part of the event, the club will be putting on demonstrations of the sport provided by experienced players, as well as getting the children out on the ice to try the sport themselves.

The association is asking parents to bring skates, helmets and gloves if possible. Skate and helmet rentals will be provided free of charge if required.
