Dave Funk of the Maple Ridge Boxing Club won the 64-kilogram class at the Diamond Belt Amateur Boxing Championships held at the Richmond Sports Club on the weekend.
In his first match, Funk, 32, was trailing his opponent, Abdul Hamid of the Queensborough Boxing Club, but then Hamid was disqualified with about 10 seconds left in the third and final round.
Hamid was committing fouls throughout the bout before he received the DQ, said Funk’s manager, Alex Nelson.
Funk then went on to defeat Christopher Cordova of the Morningstar Boxing Club, 8-6 in the final.
“He was down by two points, but in the last round he pulled it out,” said Nelson. “We believe it’s the first time Dave has won back-to-back bouts since he started boxing.”
Cordova had advanced to the final by taking out Maple Ridge’s Dylan Bishop 11-7 Friday. Nelson said Bishop, the provincial champion, had been sick prior to the tournament.
• The next competition for the MRBC will be the B.C. Silver Gloves championship to be held in Prince George Feb. 19-20.
