Hometown Heros seeks nominees

Nominees must have participated in our communities’ youth sports and/or school athletic programs, and gone on to compete internationally

The Meadowridge Sports Heroes Society is putting the call out for nominations for the 2013 Hometown Heroes inductees.

Nominees must have participated in our communities’ youth sports and/or school athletic programs, and gone on to compete internationally. The deadline for nominations in September 30.

Mary Robson, chairwoman for the program, said the board of directors is looking for a new home for the event after the Maple Ridge Rotary Club had decided not to host its annual sports banquet.

While no date for this year’s event has been set, Robson said the Hometown Heroes board felt it was important to keep the program going.

“Over the years we’ve seen the number of athletes being nominated grow and grow,” said Robson. “Lots of our past winners said that they’ve been inspired by the posters they’ve seen pinned up in the hallways of their high schools.

She said the society’s board is going to look at is how to best present the program to local youth.

Robson said  McDonald’s Restaurants  has signed up as a partner and the board is looking for other sponsors or anyone interested in hosting the event.

The board is currently looking at Nov. 26 or 27 as a possible date. Past winners of the honour include former Montreal Expo great Larry Walker and Canadian National Soccer goalie standout Karina Leblanc.
