Monique Lisek finished in fourth place at the provincial championships of heptathlon in Abbotsford last week, but some scores there have her coach optimistic about the main track and field events which are under way.

Last year Lisek scored 3,673 points, this year 4,288 points, which is a good improvement, said coach Ken Elphick, noting that the score would have earned her a silver last year.

He said the weather on the first day was horrible and many of the athletes under-performed in their events. Lisek’s time in the 100m hurdles was a second slower than her Toronto time, and her high jump and shot put were also below her best times/distances. She finished the day in fifth.

Day two went better. She won the 800m running the fastest time in the province this year. She ran 2:14, which is three seconds faster than any athlete who is entered in this weekend’s B.C. championships, said Elphick. She also had a good long jump and a better javelin than last year. However, it just wasn’t enough to medal against some tough competition.
