The Maple Ridge Burrards season went from bad to worse Sunday night as they dropped a 10-6 decision to the visiting Nanaimo Timbermen, despite outshooting them.
Burrards goalie Blake Duncan allowed 10 goals on 36 shots, including four goals on 12 shots in the first period alone. At the other end of the rink, Burrards shooters struggled to put balls past Nanaimo backup Zach Boychuk, with six goals on 43 shots.
With the loss, the Burrards fall further into the Western Lacrosse Association cellar, with a record of 1-91, and are the only team in the league below .500.
The Burrards opened the scoring Sunday night thanks to an even-strength goal from the stick of Simon Giourmetakis six minutes into the first period. The Timbermen responded three minutes later, and just past the midway mark of the period, took a 2-1 lead.
Rookie forward Brandon Bertoia tied things up for the Burrards with a powerplay goal, but a pair of goals from Nanaimo to end the period gave the visiting team a 4-2 lead heading into the second period.
Jarrett Davis cut the Nanaimo lead to one with a goal seven minutes into the middle frame, only to have the Timbermen score three unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead into the third.
The Burrards were by no means ready to concede defeat, however, as Davis, Riley Loewen, and Colton Porter each scored to bring the home team within one.
That would be as close as they would get, as the Timberman finished the Burrards off with a trio of goals to win 10-6.
Davis led the Burrards with two goals and one assist, while Randy Daly had three assists. Derek Lowe also contributed a pair of assists.
The Burrards are back in action Thursday, July 5 when they travel to New Westminster to take on the Salmonbellies. The Burrards return home Sunday, July 8 for a rematch with the Nanaimo Timbermen at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. Game time is 6:45 p.m.
