Maple Ridge hockey player Kennedy Lonson will be tending goal for the Brock Badgers next season.

Lonson is another athlete from Maple Ridge Secondary School who is moving on to university sports on an athletic scholarship – the 16th.

There have been a lot of highlights for Lonson during her career with both the Meadow Ridge Barracudas female hockey association, and the Ridge Meadows Rustlers. Competing against boys, she made the U-15 A3 team in her first year, and the next season played wth the A2 team.

She has also played with the Greater Vancouver Comets of the BCEHL, pushed for a spot on Team BC, and has spent the past two season with the Pacific Steelers – a high performance hockey development program that plays in the Junior Women’s Hockey League. They consistently send players on to Usports and U.S.-based NCAA teams.

“One of the main reasons why I wanted to play for the Steelers was that I wanted to push myself,” said Lonson. “We play in a tough league, where we face numerous nationally ranked players from both Canada and the USA.”

Despite a busy schedule, Lonson has worked with other up-and-coming goaltenders from her hometown.

“One of the things I am most proud of, is that I have been able to mentor many young goalies form the Meadow Ridge Barracudas for the past three years,” she said. “I am grateful that I was able to be a part of the beginning of their journey. I love giving back to my home association.”

Lonson will be studying business administration and tending goal for the Badgers next season, at the school in St. Catharines, Ontario.
