Maple Ridge Karate-ka medal at provincials

The Ridge Meadows Shotokan Karate dojo took several medals at the 2014 International Shotokan Karate Federation provincials....

The Ridge Meadows Shotokan Karate dojo took several medals at the 2014 International Shotokan Karate Federation Provincial Championships last weekend.

Sensei Ken Almond had seven students compete.

In his first tournament, 15-year-old Matthew Way won a bronze medal for Male Youth brown belt kata (technique) and a silver medal in male youth brown belt kumite (sparring).

Gord Brown, in his first tournament in a decade,  won silver in men’s brown belt kumite.

Mike Malhmann won silver in  senior men’s brown and black belt kumite and a bronze in kata.

Amy Shaw, who also competes nationally, won silver in both women’s black belt kata and kumite.

Way, Brown and Shaw won silver in team kata.

The club also had three juniors, siblings Shaylynn and Blayke Grandstrom and Marcello Bianchi, who  competed and “showed great kime” (sportsmanship and determination).
