While the rest of the Ridge Meadows Minor Baseball Association took part in exhibition games during Opening Day festivities on Saturday, the provincial champion midget triple-A team hosted an icebreaker tournament.
The Royals got off to a rough start, with just a tie as a result in their first three games.
The Royals lost their opener on Thursday night by a 6-2 score to the Langley Jr. Blaze.
Then on Friday they tied a noon game with the Vancouver Mounties 7-7.
Catcher Brayden Slaughter had a good day at the plate, going 3-3 with two doubles. He also walked and scored three runs.
Colton Beard also had a hot bat, going 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, and Chad Weststeyn was 1-2 with two RBI and a run.
On the mound, starter Robert Gibson scattered four hits and two walks, allowing one earned run in five innings. He also struck out seven.
Friday night the Royals lost their third game of the tournament, 9-8 to the Tri-City Indians.
Nick Peters led the offence with a double, two walks, a run and aRBI, while Beard smoked a three-run double.
The Royals plan to make the tournament an annual event.
Their next action will be a home double-header on Sunday, when they face the West Kelowna Diamondbacks. Games will be at Hammond Stadium at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
