Four years ago, a group of local skaters put together a competition in Maple Ridge that is becoming a Christmas Tradition.
They dubbed it Shred. Share. Stoked.
Jesse Holland was one of the youth who got the event rolling. The kids involved wanted a local skateboard competition, but they also wanted to raise awareness of local charities, and generate food and clothing for donation.
These days, Holland works for the youth centre and organizes the competition.
Competitors can enter for $5 cash, five non-perishable food items or five items of winter clothing.
The result of this year's event, which was held on Sunday at the Greg Moore Youth Centre, was 10 bags of clothes and gifts, a tub of food, and close to $200 in cash.
The beginner category was won by Daniel Ruiz.
Derek Oye took the intermediate class, and the top advanced skater on the day was Sam Hampton.
"It really is crazy to see the skill at each level," said one of the organizers Richard Bosma.
"The experts – it'll blow your mind some of the things they can do."
About 30 competitors took part, and some 40 spectators took in the event.
