Stadel rink takes Haney Masters' league lead with win

League competition continues at Golden Ears Winter Club with draws Monday and Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m.

Jack Stadel’s rink jumped into sole possession of first place in Haney Master’s Curling League play on Wednesday with a resounding 13-2 victory over Bill Hanula’s rink.

Stadel, along with Wayne Leech, Tony Stadig and Terry Lajeunesse ran their record to 4-0 to break a second-place deadlock with the Hanula-led rink.

After an even first three ends,  Stadel’s rink slowly pulled away for a 13-2 victory over Hanula and his team of Rudy Baird, Kent Skene and Stan Melanson.

With the loss, Hanula slipped into a second place tie with Peter England’s rink, each with a 3-1 record.

Meanwhile, the Lorne Fletcher rink ran into some stiff competition in the Fraser Valley Masters Club Championships Saturday in Langley.

The rink, consisting of Stan Melanson, Barry Elson, and Eric Holler lost to Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Mission as they struggled to adjust to the ice at Langley Curling Club.

They rallied late Friday afternoon with a tie against Cloverdale and then recorded a lop-sided 13-1 victory over Delta early Saturday morning.

Their efforts, however, fell short of retaining the Championship trophy which was won last year by Hanula’s Haney Masters representatives. Hanula’s rink consisted of Peter England, Kent Skene and Barry Elson.

Chilliwack took the Master’s championship as they edged out the Peace Arch rink in the final.
