In the wake of the recent mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, the issue of school safety is again a topic of conversation in our communities.

U.S. authorities said suspect Nikolas Cruz, 19, had a string of run-ins with school authorities that ended with his expulsion. Police also were repeatedly called to his house throughout his childhood. Cruz’s lawyers said there were repeated warning signs that he was mentally unstable and potentially violent. Yet he legally purchased a semi-automatic rifle.

On Monday, two North Delta schools were briefly locked down as police searched for a man allegedly wielding a gun.

Police were contacted around noon about a suspicious male near Delview secondary with what looked like a firearm.

Police located the male, who turned out to be a student at Delview, and found he was in possession of a pellet gun.
